After310 these things1697, and the establishment571 thereof, Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804 came935, and entered935 into Judah3063, and encamped2583 against the fenced1219 cities5892, and thought559 to win1234 them for himself.
And when Hezekiah3169 saw7200 that Sennacherib5576 was come935, and that he was purposed6440 to fight4421 against Jerusalem3389,
He took counsel3289 with his princes8269 and his mighty men1368 to stop5640 the waters4325 of the fountains5869 which were without2351 the city5892: and they did help5826 him.
So there was gathered6908 much7227 people5971 together6908, who stopped5640 all the fountains4599, and the brook5158 that ran7857 through the midst8432 of the land776, saying559, Why should the kings4428 of Assyria804 come935, and find4672 much7227 water4325?
Also he strengthened2388 himself, and built up1129 all the wall2346 that was broken6555, and raised it up5927 to the towers4026, and another312 wall2346 without2351, and repaired2388 Millo4407 in the city5892 of David1732, and made6213 darts7973 and shields4043 in abundance7230.
And he set5414 captains8269 of war4421 over the people5971, and gathered them together6908 to him in the street7339 of the gate8179 of the city5892, and spake1696 comfortably3824 to them, saying559,
Be strong2388 and courageous553, be not afraid3372 nor dismayed2865 for6440 the king4428 of Assyria804, nor for all the multitude1995 that is with him: for there be more7227 with us than with him:
With him is an arm2220 of flesh1320; but with us is the LORD3068 our God430 to help5826 us, and to fight3898 our battles4421. And the people5971 rested5564 themselves upon the words1697 of Hezekiah3169 king4428 of Judah3063.
After310 this did Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804 send7971 his servants5650 to Jerusalem3389, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish3923, and all his power4475 with him,) unto Hezekiah3169 king4428 of Judah3063, and unto all Judah3063 that were at Jerusalem3389, saying559,
Thus saith559 Sennacherib5576 king4428 of Assyria804, Whereon do ye trust982, that ye abide3427 in the siege4692 in Jerusalem3389?
Doth not Hezekiah3169 persuade5496 you to give5414 over yourselves to die4191 by famine7458 and by thirst6772, saying559, The LORD3068 our God430 shall deliver5337 us out of the hand3709 of the king4428 of Assyria804?
Hath not the same Hezekiah3169 taken away5493 his high places1116 and his altars4196, and commanded559 Judah3063 and Jerusalem3389, saying559, Ye shall worship7812 before6440 one259 altar4196, and burn incense6999 upon it?
Know3045 ye not what I and my fathers1 have done6213 unto all the people5971 of other lands776? were the gods430 of the nations1471 of those lands776 any ways3201 able3201 to deliver5337 their lands776 out of mine hand3027?
Who was there among all the gods430 of those nations1471 that my fathers1 utterly destroyed2763, that could3201 deliver5337 his people5971 out of mine hand3027, that your God430 should be able3201 to deliver5337 you out of mine hand3027?
Now therefore let not3808 Hezekiah2396 deceive5377 you, nor persuade5496 you on this manner, neither yet believe539 him: for no god433 of any nation1471 or kingdom4467 was able3201 to deliver5337 his people5971 out of mine hand3027, and out of the hand3027 of my fathers1: how much less shall your God430 deliver5337 you out of mine hand3027?
And his servants5650 spake1696 yet more against the LORD3068 God430, and against his servant5650 Hezekiah3169.
He wrote3789 also letters5612 to rail2778 on the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478, and to speak559 against him, saying559, As the gods430 of the nations1471 of other lands776 have not delivered5337 their people5971 out of mine hand3027, so shall not the God430 of Hezekiah3169 deliver5337 his people5971 out of mine hand3027.
Then they cried7121 with a loud1419 voice6963 in the Jews' speech3066 unto the people5971 of Jerusalem3389 that were on the wall2346, to affright3372 them, and to trouble926 them; that they might take3920 the city5892.
And they spake1696 against5921 the God430 of Jerusalem3389, as against the gods430 of the people5971 of the earth776, which were the work4639 of the hands3027 of man120.
And for this cause Hezekiah3169 the king4428, and the prophet5030 Isaiah3470 the son1121 of Amoz531, prayed6419 and cried2199 to heaven8064.
And the LORD3068 sent7971 an angel4397, which cut off3582 all the mighty men1368 of valour2428, and the leaders5057 and captains8269 in the camp4264 of the king4428 of Assyria804. So he returned7725 with shame1322 of face6440 to his own land776. And when he was come935 into the house1004 of his god430, they that came forth3329 of his own bowels4578 slew5307 him there with the sword2719.
Thus the LORD3068 saved3467 Hezekiah3169 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 from the hand3027 of Sennacherib5576 the king4428 of Assyria804, and from the hand3027 of all other, and guided5095 them on every side5439.
And many7227 brought935 gifts4503 unto the LORD3068 to Jerusalem3389, and presents4030 to Hezekiah3169 king4428 of Judah3063: so that he was magnified5375 in the sight5869 of all nations1471 from thenceforth310.
In those days3117 Hezekiah3169 was sick2470 to the death4191, and prayed6419 unto the LORD3068: and he spake559 unto him, and he gave5414 him a sign4159.
But Hezekiah3169 rendered not again7725 according to the benefit1576 done unto him; for his heart3820 was lifted up1361: therefore there was wrath7110 upon him, and upon Judah3063 and Jerusalem3389.
Notwithstanding Hezekiah3169 humbled3665 himself for the pride1363 of his heart3820, both he and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389, so that the wrath7110 of the LORD3068 came935 not upon them in the days3117 of Hezekiah3169.
And Hezekiah3169 had exceeding3966 much7235 riches6239 and honour3519: and he made6213 himself treasuries214 for silver3701, and for gold2091, and for precious3368 stones68, and for spices1314, and for shields4043, and for all manner of pleasant2532 jewels3627;
Storehouses4543 also for the increase8393 of corn1715, and wine8492, and oil3323; and stalls723 for all manner of beasts929, and cotes220 for flocks5739.
Moreover he provided6213 him cities5892, and possessions4735 of flocks6629 and herds1241 in abundance7230: for God430 had given5414 him substance7399 very3966 much7227.
This same Hezekiah3169 also stopped5640 the upper5945 watercourse4161 4325 of Gihon1521, and brought it straight3474 down4295 to the west side4628 of the city5892 of David1732. And Hezekiah3169 prospered6743 in all his works4639.
Howbeit3651 in the business of the ambassadors3887 of the princes8269 of Babylon894, who sent7971 unto him to enquire1875 of the wonder4159 that was done in the land776, God430 left5800 him, to try5254 him, that he might know3045 all that was in his heart3824.
Now the rest3499 of the acts1697 of Hezekiah3169, and his goodness2617, behold, they are written3789 in the vision2377 of Isaiah3470 the prophet5030, the son1121 of Amoz531, and in the book5612 of the kings4428 of Judah3063 and Israel3478.
And Hezekiah3169 slept7901 with his fathers1, and they buried6912 him in the chiefest4608 of the sepulchres6913 of the sons1121 of David1732: and all Judah3063 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 did him6213 honour3519 at his death4194. And Manasseh4519 his son1121 reigned4427 in his stead.
