3And Moab4124 was sore3966 afraid1481 of6440 the people5971, because they were many7227: and Moab4124 was distressed6973 because of6440 the children1121 of Israel3478.
4And Moab4124 said559 unto the elders2205 of Midian4080, Now shall this company6951 lick up3897 all that are round about5439 us, as the ox7794 licketh up3897 the grass3418 of the field7704. And Balak1111 the son1121 of Zippor6834 was king4428 of the Moabites4124 at that time6256.
5He sent7971 messengers4397 therefore unto Balaam1109 the son1121 of Beor1160 to Pethor6604, which is by the river5104 of the land776 of the children1121 of his people5971, to call7121 him, saying559, Behold, there is a people5971 come out3318 from Egypt4714: behold, they cover3680 the face5869 of the earth776, and they abide3427 over against4136 me:
6Come3212 now therefore, I pray thee, curse779 me this people5971; for they are too mighty6099 for me: peradventure I shall prevail3201, that we may smite5221 them, and that I may drive them out1644 of the land776: for I wot3045 that he whom thou blessest1288 is blessed1288, and he whom thou cursest779 is cursed779.
7And the elders2205 of Moab4124 and the elders2205 of Midian4080 departed3212 with the rewards of divination7081 in their hand3027; and they came935 unto Balaam1109, and spake1696 unto him the words1697 of Balak1111.
8And he said559 unto them, Lodge3885 here this night3915, and I will bring7725 you word1697 again7725, as the LORD3068 shall speak1696 unto me: and the princes8269 of Moab4124 abode3427 with Balaam1109.
9And God430 came935 unto Balaam1109, and said559, What men582 are these with thee?
10And Balaam1109 said559 unto God430, Balak1111 the son1121 of Zippor6834, king4428 of Moab4124, hath sent7971 unto me, saying,
11Behold, there is a people5971 come out3318 of Egypt4714, which covereth3680 the face5869 of the earth776: come3212 now, curse6895 me them; peradventure I shall be able3201 to overcome3898 them, and drive them out1644.
12And God430 said559 unto Balaam1109, Thou shalt not go3212 with them; thou shalt not curse779 the people5971: for they are blessed1288.
13And Balaam1109 rose up6965 in the morning1242, and said559 unto the princes8269 of Balak1111, Get3212 you into your land776: for the LORD3068 refuseth3985 to give me leave5414 to go1980 with you.
14And the princes8269 of Moab4124 rose up6965, and they went935 unto Balak1111, and said559, Balaam1109 refuseth3985 to come1980 with us.
15And Balak1111 sent7971 yet again3254 princes8269, more7227, and more honourable3513 than they.
16And they came935 to Balaam1109, and said559 to him, Thus saith559 Balak1111 the son1121 of Zippor6834, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder4513 thee from coming1980 unto me:
17For I will promote3513 thee unto very3966 great3513 honour3513, and I will do6213 whatsoever thou sayest559 unto me: come3212 therefore, I pray thee, curse6895 me this people5971.
18And Balaam1109 answered6030 and said559 unto the servants5650 of Balak1111, If Balak1111 would give5414 me his house1004 full4393 of silver3701 and gold2091, I cannot3201 go beyond5674 the word6310 of the LORD3068 my God430, to do6213 less6996 or more1419.
19Now therefore, I pray you, tarry3427 ye also here this night3915, that I may know3045 what the LORD3068 will say1696 unto me more3254.
20And God430 came935 unto Balaam1109 at night3915, and said559 unto him, If the men582 come935 to call7121 thee, rise up6965, and go3212 with them; but yet389 the word1697 which I shall say1696 unto thee, that shalt thou do6213.
21And Balaam1109 rose up6965 in the morning1242, and saddled2280 his ass860, and went3212 with the princes8269 of Moab4124.
22And God's430 anger639 was kindled2734 because he went1980: and the angel4397 of the LORD3068 stood3320 in the way1870 for an adversary7854 against him. Now he was riding7392 upon his ass860, and his two8147 servants5288 were with him.
23And the ass860 saw7200 the angel4397 of the LORD3068 standing5324 in the way1870, and his sword2719 drawn8025 in his hand3027: and the ass860 turned aside5186 out of the way1870, and went3212 into the field7704: and Balaam1109 smote5221 the ass860, to turn5186 her into the way1870.
24But the angel4397 of the LORD3068 stood5975 in a path4934 of the vineyards3754, a wall1447 being on this side, and a wall1447 on that side.
25And when the ass860 saw7200 the angel4397 of the LORD3068, she thrust3905 herself unto the wall7023, and crushed3905 Balaam's1109 foot7272 against the wall7023: and he smote5221 her again3254.
26And the angel4397 of the LORD3068 went5674 further3254, and stood5975 in a narrow6862 place4725, where was no way1870 to turn5186 either to the right hand3225 or to the left8040.
27And when the ass860 saw7200 the angel4397 of the LORD3068, she fell down7257 under Balaam1109: and Balaam's1109 anger639 was kindled2734, and he smote5221 the ass860 with a staff4731.
28And the LORD3068 opened6605 the mouth6310 of the ass860, and she said559 unto Balaam1109, What have I done6213 unto thee, that thou hast smitten5221 me these three7969 times7272?
29And Balaam1109 said559 unto the ass860, Because thou hast mocked5953 me: I would3863 there were3426 a sword2719 in mine hand3027, for now would I kill2026 thee.
30And the ass860 said559 unto Balaam1109, Am not I thine ass860, upon which thou hast ridden7392 ever since I was thine unto this day3117? was I ever5532 wont5532 to do so6213 unto thee? And he said559, Nay.
31Then the LORD3068 opened1540 the eyes5869 of Balaam1109, and he saw7200 the angel4397 of the LORD3068 standing5324 in the way1870, and his sword2719 drawn8025 in his hand3027: and he bowed down6915 his head, and fell flat7812 on his face639.
32And the angel4397 of the LORD3068 said559 unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten5221 thine ass860 these three7969 times7272? behold, I went out3318 to withstand7854 thee, because thy way1870 is perverse3399 before me:
33And the ass860 saw7200 me, and turned5186 from me6440 these three7969 times7272: unless194 she had turned5186 from me6440, surely now also I had slain2026 thee, and saved her alive2421.
34And Balaam1109 said559 unto the angel4397 of the LORD3068, I have sinned2398; for I knew3045 not that thou stoodest5324 in the way1870 against7125 me: now therefore, if it displease thee7489 5869, I will get me back again7725.
35And the angel4397 of the LORD3068 said559 unto Balaam1109, Go3212 with the men582: but only657 the word1697 that I shall speak1696 unto thee, that thou shalt speak1696. So Balaam1109 went3212 with the princes8269 of Balak1111.
36And when Balak1111 heard8085 that Balaam1109 was come935, he went out3318 to meet7125 him unto a city5892 of Moab4124, which is in the border1366 of Arnon769, which is in the utmost7097 coast1366.
37And Balak1111 said559 unto Balaam1109, Did I not earnestly7971 send7971 unto thee to call7121 thee? wherefore camest1980 thou not unto me? am I not able3201 indeed552 to promote thee to honour3513?
38And Balaam1109 said559 unto Balak1111, Lo, I am come935 unto thee: have I now any power3201 at all3201 to say1696 any thing3972? the word1697 that God430 putteth7760 in my mouth6310, that shall I speak1696.
39And Balaam1109 went3212 with Balak1111, and they came935 unto Kirjathhuzoth2351 7155.
40And Balak1111 offered2076 oxen1241 and sheep6629, and sent7971 to Balaam1109, and to the princes8269 that were with him.
41And it came to pass on the morrow1242, that Balak1111 took3947 Balaam1109, and brought him up5927 into the high places1116 of Baal1120, that thence he might see7200 the utmost7097 part of the people5971.
